Frustration for Ports

Rye II 31 Cinque Ports 14 (HT 24-7)

Cinque Ports once again found themselves wondering what could have been. A very close game, won ultimately by Rye's stronger killer instinct. The game started in a very worrying fashion for Cinque Ports as Rye run in a try from the kick off, shifting the ball from right to left through a disorganised defence. Last seasons' Ports team might have struggled to settle after such a shocking start but coach Bill Langley has given the side some steel and Cinque Ports quickly reorganised.

Rye found themselves being outmatched in the scrums and line outs, relying on their pacy backs. Forwards Steve Crump, Craig Barningham and Terry Doorey made nuisances of themselves around the fringes stealing ball and forcing Rye to resort to killing the ball at the ruck. Rye's pace did tell and they scored two more tries to take the score to 19-0. Cinque Ports kept attacking the fringes, as a result Luke Price was released from a ruck. The  winger cut inside straightening his run and leaving the defence flat footed. Price released to Christiaan Brandt who cut through the Rye forwards to score. From a difficult angle scrum half Carl Malthouse converted. Rye scored another their centre hacking the ball home before touching down. On numerous occasions in the first half the solid forward platform meant that Cinque Ports broke into the Rye 22 but couldn't breach their line again.

The second half saw a slight shift as Rye's younger pack found parity in the scrums, but still CPR won ball on both sides lineouts. Both sides had scoring opportunities- Price, Brandt, Craig Brown and Gary Swift all coming close. From one of these opportunities a spilt ball fell into the hands of a Rye winger who easily ran home from 80 yards with only forwards in defence. Cinque Ports again attacked and the fluid running of Brandt again unlocked the defence placing Czech centre Rob Fink over for his first try of the season.

A game effort but a greater cutting edge would have brought victory. Other the positives saw the return of Craig Brown, Tim Gough and Mark Jeffries from injury. Steve Crump was named man of the match.
