Cinque Ports lose out in swamp!
Cinque Ports Rugby 5 Crowborough II 26 (HT 0-14)
As the skies emptied over St Leonards it looked unlikely Cinque Ports game would go ahead, making it a month since their last game. Fortunately a willing ref and opposition plus 18 enthusiastic players meant that Ports took to the field for the first time since mid-November, and like that game were facing higher division opposition.
As expected Crowborough started strongly, their powerful back row and centre's probing the Cinque Ports defence which held strong. Crowborough did attempt to put the ball wide but found both their wingers shackled by Tony Potter and Darren Watts. Potter saving a certain try by driving the winger into touch from behind his own line. With the ball in hand Ports did cause problems, full back Gavin Sams breaking 50 yards before being illegally brought down by his opposite numbers boot. Centre Luke Price also made a 30 yard break, which was recycled by acting captain Carl Malthouse before being lose forward in the wet conditions. This was to be the pattern of the days play for the inexperienced back line, ball was often lost forward resulting in lost opportunities. Crowborough did score two tries, both times their inside centre cutting through gaps.
The second half saw deteriorating conditions underfoot, Crowborough taking advantage of fallen Cinque Ports players to score a third try. Cinque Ports tried taking the ball forward though their forwards Mark Wright, Dale Whittington and Steve Crump all taking the ball forward and causing problems for the Crowborough defence. Crowborugh did slide in for a fourth try. This seemed to sting the Cinque Ports players into life. Christiaan Brandt, Rob Fink and Malthouse linked well to take the ball into the Crowborough 22. Craig Barningham drove the ball forward but was initially repulsed before, another big drive by himself and flanker Gavin Thomas saw Barningham crash over for his second try of the season. Malthouse missed the conversion.
Team manger Thomas was pleased with the performance "We always had our work cut out against a strong side like Crowbourough II, but we defended well, caused problems in attack and held their scrum all game." Wright was named man of the match.
