No surprises, but Cinque Ports push Littlehampton in Sussex RFU Plate Cup
Sussex Plate
Cinque Ports Rugby 3 Littlehampton RFC 22 (HT 0-12)
On a freezing November afternoon Cinque Ports faced Sussex 2 West outfit Littlehampton in the Sussex Plate. The well drilled West Sussex side were certainly overwhelming favourites and started in sprightly fashion, relying on their solid pack to inch up the pitch, phase after phase of possession saw them drive over and convert to lead 7-0. So far so predictable. Then CPR unleashed their potent backs. Scrum Half Chris Eastwood running 60 metres before being tackled near the line, centre pairing Colin Whyte and Christiaan Brandt breaking through their solid defence, and on one occasion Rob Fink thought he had scored after Brandt had outpaced the defence only to be called back.
Captain Paul Smart ensured the ball was in the hands of the backs as much as possible, winger Tony Potter displaying massive potential using his power and pace to cause mayhem amongst the defence. Littlehampton were clinical though and scored another try after a lack of discipline gifted them yards of territory and it was easy for them to crash over. After the turn around CPR found ball much harder to come by, good work by Craig Barningham in the pack meant that Cinque Ports did punch into the opposition half but Littlehampton did keep them on the back foot. Some really great tackling by Steve Price and Steve Crump kept holding them out of the area around the try line. Smart kicked a difficult penalty, but Littlehampton scored another to make it 3-17. With 15 minutes to go a combination of injuries and a yellow card for tough tackling Gary Swift saw CPR fail to gain enough possession to score the two converted tries they needed and a great backs move saw the pink shirted West Sussex side score their fourth try. A hard fought win for a team in the division above St Leonards own Cinque Ports.
Paul Smart was named man of the match. Team Manager Gavin Thomas said "We were leagues apart in terms of where we play our rugby but not in standard. Everywhere around the field we stretched them and the result wasn't secured until right at the end. I was pleased by the effort all the players made today".
Cinque Ports next face Burgess Hill II in a friendly Saturday 29th November at the Grove KO 1.00pm, so to avoid the England match against New Zealand.
