Inventive Ports outdone by ruthless Heathfield

Cinque Ports 5 Heathfield & Waldron IV 17 (HT 0-10)

For a second successive week Cinque Ports inventive attacking rugby was defeated by a more pragmatic approach. In early exchanges it seemed as if a Cinque Ports victory was possible as a very strong pack controlled the scrummage- winning ball against the head. To counter this Heathfield used a strong back row to put pressure on half backs Andy Salmon and Carl Malthouse. Both sides seemed to be testing the other, Heathfield driving centrally before spinning the ball wide. Cinque Ports using the pace of wingers Darren Watts and Luke Price. In the loose Steve Crump, Dale Whittington and Craig Barningham drove hard against a strong Heathfield side. Ports couldn't find a cutting edge despite this, and from two breaks in their own half Heathfield scored two tries. Heathfield relied on broken play as set piece was dominated by Cinque Ports, player-coach Bill Langley destroying any ball at the scrummage.

The second half saw some changes to personnel, Christiaan Brandt coming on at outside half and Paul Maplesden in the second row. The scrummage still held strong, allowing Salmon and Brandt to exploiting a now slowing Heathfield back row. Both wingers were given space to exploit, as the heavy pitch took a toll on tired Heathfield legs and centre Colin Whyte caused problems with his strong straight running. Eventually ports had to score and a sloppy kick into space fell into the arms of the elegant Brandt who slid through space to go over for his eleventh try of the season. Terry Doorey's kick slid wide. Ports continued to apply pressure, Whyte and centre partner Shane Potter acting as wrecking balls- smashing into waves of green defenders. Despite this Heathfield held strong, and as a desperate Ports pushed for an equalising score a hopeful kick and chase gave them a third try and the game. Good performances all round- Crump, Whittington and Barningham placing themselves in definite contention for end of season honours, alongside a strong set of forwards who dominated the game throughout. Manager Gavin Thomas was reflective about the result "We did everything well, what lost us the game was combination of bad luck and a lack of ruthlessness. With a more ruthless streak and a better pitch this could have been an excellent win but we'll take an excellent team performance into our next game against Crowborough".
