Ports brushed aside

Cinque Ports 3 Rye 45 (HT 0-21)

After a succession of strong performances in the league Cinque Ports found themselves facing a very strong team from local rivals Rye. The game started well for Ports with the St Leonards side holding their own at the scrum, and disrupting the Rye line out.

In these initial exchanges Ports were strong at the ruck, Steve Crump and Nick Villeperieux crashing into the Rye defence. This led to a Ports penalty which stand off Greg Stokes was unlucky to miss. This was the high point of the game for Cinque Ports as Rye used a strong 10/12 combination to dominate the game in broken play. With the Rye centre running strong angles and dominating the channel scores were inevitable and Rye scored three from turnovers-ghosting into gaps around the fringes and running home. All three were converted. Cinque Ports didn't seem to be able to match the intensity of the Rye side, whilst still holding their own in the scrummage. Ports didn't seem to match Rye at the rucks and this gave Rye opportunities to run at the exposed flanks.

The second half saw Ports raise their intensity, Stokes smashing into their 12 and halting his stride. Villeperieux clearing rucks with ferocity. Cinque Ports did have some attacking ball- winger Rob Finks jinked and twisted into space but to no avail. Rye continued to run in tries, but Ports did not stop running. Despite the heavy pitch Stokes kept stepping away from the tackle and kicking testing balls that caused disarray in the Rye ranks. Dean Dedman also looked for gaps and was strong carrying the ball forward- maintaining his good recent form. Shane Potter also ensured Ports broke the gain line. Eventually good work by the backs and strong support from the forwards saw a penalty effort that Stokes slotted over.

After the game manager Gavin Thomas was honest in his appraisal "There were good things, but we have to be realistic- Our intensity, commitment and aggression were lacking and that meant Rye's day was far easier than it should have been. Next week will be different"
