Ports enter Brave New World
After the initial fixture against Uckfield fell through Cinque Ports rapidly organised a fixture against St Francis RFC to enter the brave new world of the Experimental Law Variations!
Sussex 2 (West) side St Francis were using the game as trial match and run out their 1st XV twice against Cinque Ports and their 2nd XV against Ditchling RFC. Ports then faced Ditchling in a fast paced 10 a side game. A very well drilled St Francis side were shocked by the forward orientated Cinque Ports game, new laws surrounding scrums and line outs benefited the Ports pack and an early attacking line out was won by flanker Carl Malthouse.
Half backs Paul Smart and Christiaan Brandt then combined well to allow Brandt to slip through a gap to score. St Francis found the Ports defence solid and brought on a variety of pacy wingers on who punished a slow Cinque Ports back Line. The first game ended in a creditable 19-5 defeat for the St Leonards team against higher division opposition. A shell shocked St Francis ran out their strongest XV and ensured the next 30 Minute meeting between the two teams was a tough match for the Cinque Ports side who lost 22-0 but St Francis did praise their work around the fringes. Flanker Gary Swift took advantage of the ELV's and was aggressive from the base of scrums, punishing the St Francis midfield.
In a third game Cinque Ports played Ditchling in an open ten aside match. Ports lent an injury ravaged Ditchling a variety of players in a frenetic game that was eventually won 30-10 by the Ditchling/Ports ten. Prop Mark Wright and Swift scoring for Ports, and Ports Team Manager Gavin Thomas scoring twice for Ditchling! A very successful adventure in Crawley overall in Ports who demonstrated a strong forwards based game and good awareness of the ELV's.
Coach Bill Langley was full of praise for his charges, particularly centre Craig Brown who he chose as man of the day for his strong defensive work and bullocking attacking runs. Langley also saw many positives in the day "There are a few weaknesses to work on but it is very encouraging that we made a team 2 divisions higher than us worried to the point that they refused to put their 2nd team out against us. It bodes well for the season"
