Cinque Ports 13 Hastings & Bexhill III 44 (HT 10-20)
Again the score only tells part of the story. The absence of 18 established Cinque Ports players meant that Ports started with a 10 point forfeit for beginning the game without an established front row, and a depleted pack of 7. This did not effect the confidence of the Ports players and the St Leonards team started more confidently, strong defence held back the powerful H & B runners.
A surprised H & B pack conceded early penalties, Paul Smart converting one to make the score 3-10. A wounded H & B quickly bounced back, a powerful catch and drive saw an excellent forwards try from a line out. Hastings' rolling maul was a powerful weapon throughout. Cinque Ports used the uncontested scrums as a powerful base for their attacking, backs based rugby. Colin Whyte, Christiaan Brandt and Gavin Sams all caused massive problems with the ball in hand. Brandt grabbing himself a try after a scything run, which Smart converted. Another rolling maul saw a second try which saw the score 10-20.
Ports were playing beautiful flowing rugby which belied the fact they only had 14 players, Hastings powerful runners didn't receive enough ball preventing scoring opportunities, credit for this must go to all of Cinque Ports but particularly Dale Whittington and Steve Crump who snaffled up loose ball, stole ruck and maul ball and generally caused problems everywhere around the field. The second half saw centre Craig Brown leave with a shoulder injury, and a larger Hastings squad run in a number of tries. Paul Smart converted another penalty, and Gavin Sams illuminated the second half with a fantastic 40 metre run that Darren Watts was unlucky not to finish with another try. Cinque Ports Team Manager Gavin Thomas was only full of praise for the side "I think technically we showed we can play rugby today, we were missing a lot of our impact players but we still won ball around the field and with it in hand we were a delight to watch". Both sides contributed to an excellent friendly local derby. Whittington was named as man of the match.
